Direct Flights Resume Between Cuba and Russia

On Sunday, December 24, Cuba and Russia resumed direct flights between their capitals with a flight that departed from Sheremetyevo International Airport heading to Havana. The new airline began operations on October 29, under a single banner, marking the restart of these connections.

A group of 328 Russian tourists were left stranded in Havana after a Rossiya airline flight was delayed by 28 hours due to technical issues. The departure of the aircraft operating flight number 6850 Havana – Moscow was initially scheduled for 9:00 a.m., but due to setbacks, it did not take off at the scheduled time.

The delayed flight resulted in passengers being transferred to a local hotel due to the circumstances. Passengers did not receive food supplies during the wait and the airport could not arrange food loading on time. Rossiya Airlines assured that it complied with providing transportation and accommodation to the passengers based on air regulations and established standards.

The resumption of direct flights between Cuba and Russia has presented itself as an attractive option for Russian citizens following the ban on Russian airlines to Europe, projecting the Caribbean island as an accessible alternative destination. With the reactivation of these connections, it was expected to achieve 13 weekly direct frequencies to several Cuban destinations, with flights already operating to Varadero since July 1.

The Rossiya airline, a subsidiary of Aeroflot, owned by the Russian government, has faced technical problems on one of its flights to Havana. Although technical staff managed to resolve a defect in the aircraft's turbine, the crew's work schedule had already ended, causing an additional delay in the flight's departure. Despite the inconveniences, the airline has been restoring connections and operations to facilitate the flow of tourists between both countries.
