Russia stated on Monday that Cuba is facing a severe fuel shortage and accused the United States of attempting to strangle the economy of the Caribbean country. The fuel situation in Cuba is 'truly critical,' said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov when asked about the aviation fuel shortage on the island and whether it would affect Russian tourists planning to leave the country. Peskov noted that Russia maintains intensive contacts with Cuba through diplomatic and other channels. According to the Argentine News Agency (NA), Peskov stated: 'The suffocating tactics employed by the United States are undoubtedly causing many difficulties for the country. We are discussing with our Cuban friends possible ways to solve these problems or, at least, to provide all possible assistance.' Cuba has warned international airlines that aircraft fuel will not be available on the island starting this Tuesday, which led to companies like Air Canada suspending or adjusting flights amid the shortage.
