Cuba Receives Support Amidst Energy Crisis

Cuba faces a severe energy crisis following Hurricane Óscar, leading to widespread blackouts and internet outages. Mexico's CFE offers technical and humanitarian support, although misinformation about financial assistance circulates online.

Cuba Receives Support Amidst Energy Crisis

The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has committed to assisting the Cuban people amid an energy crisis that caused a massive blackout on the island. Despite circulating false news about the alleged allocation of a credit line of up to 20 billion dollars by the Mexican government to Cuba, this information has not been officially confirmed.

The energy crisis in Cuba was triggered by problems at the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant, leading to the collapse of the National Electric System and a blackout that affected various sectors of the population, including internet outages and problems in hospitals. Additionally, the island was threatened by the intense rains from tropical storm Óscar, which recently became a hurricane.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico announced through its social media the support for the Cuban people, with the active participation of the CFE to help restore electricity supply. Both the Mexican embassy in Havana and President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed Mexico's willingness to provide humanitarian assistance to Cuba during this difficult time.

According to President Sheinbaum, Mexico reaffirms its commitment to support the Cuban people and rejects any form of blockade. Furthermore, false information that circulated on social media regarding the alleged allocation of a million-dollar credit to Cuba by the Mexican government was denied.
