The United Nations coordinator in Cuba, Francisco Besón, has warned of a worsening humanitarian crisis day by day due to restrictions on oil exports to the communist island. This is affecting vital sectors in the country. The United States imposed an energy embargo on Cuba last January, but later softened its stance, saying that Venezuelan oil could be resold and shipped to Cuba's private sector. However, Besón stated: "What we are witnessing on the ground is not a temporary shortage, but a more systematic energy shock, which has become the main factor in multiplying humanitarian risks".
