Tropical storm Oscar is heading towards the Bahamas after affecting eastern Cuba with heavy rains. With maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h, it is moving northwest at 14 km/h. Cubans are facing a prolonged blackout that has left the population without electricity or water since last week.
In Great Inagua, Bahamas, Oscar has already caused damage to homes and the evacuation of several residents. Meanwhile, tropical storm Kristy has formed in the Mexican Pacific. A tropical storm warning has been issued for the central and southeastern parts of the Bahamas.
According to expert Michael Lowry, Oscar is the smallest hurricane on record, with a wind field of just 10 km in diameter. Despite there being no forecasts indicating its strengthening into a hurricane, Oscar made landfall as a category 1 in Guantanamo, Cuba, on Sunday with winds of 120 km/h, causing flooding and at least six deaths.
The National Hurricane Center of the United States reported that Oscar was located south of Long Island, Bahamas, moving west at 26 km/h. For its part, Kristy is expected to strengthen into a hurricane on Wednesday, posing no threats to land.
