Cuba suffered a new nationwide blackout this Monday, the sixth in just a year and a half, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) reported. «A total disconnection of the National Electric System (SEN) has occurred, the causes are being investigated and the protocols for restoration are beginning to be activated,» Minem informed on social networks without yet pointing to the cause of the new massive blackout, reported the portal DW and learned the Argentine News Agency. Cuba has been mired in a deep energy crisis since mid-2024, a situation that has worsened in the last three months with the blocking of oil imports by the U.S., which is completely paralyzing the economy and fueling social unrest. Based on previous experience, the restoration of the SEN is a slow and laborious process that can take days. The process involves starting to generate energy with easy-start sources—solar, hydroelectric, and generation motors—to serve small areas that are then interconnected.
