The Cuban ambassador to the UN, Ernesto Soberón, reaffirmed his country's commitment to peace and international security during the substantive session of the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations (C-34) at the United Nations headquarters in New York. During the general debate, Soberón highlighted the importance of the UN's role in maintaining global peace and security, emphasizing the need for operations to be conducted in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter.
In his interventions, the Cuban diplomat advocated for addressing the root causes of conflicts and not just relying on peacekeeping operations as a temporary measure. He also underscored the importance of cooperation among contributing countries, the Security Council, and the Secretariat, as well as the need to ensure the safety of personnel deployed in these missions.
Soberón expressed concern about the use of new technologies in Peacekeeping Operations and highlighted the need to establish clear legal, operational, technical, and financial frameworks for their implementation. The Cuban ambassador reiterated the importance of promoting international cooperation to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of UN peace operations.
The Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations (C-34) was established in 1965 with the aim of assessing and improving UN peacekeeping operations. Since then, its work has focused on optimizing the effectiveness of these missions to promote stability and security on a global scale.
