The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday approved a draft resolution calling on the United States to end the economic, commercial, and financial embargo against Cuba. The draft resolution was approved with 165 votes in favor, seven against, and 12 abstentions. Chinese Ambassador Guo Jiakun stated that the blockade and sanctions have severely infringed upon Cuba's right to subsistence and development, causing great harm to the Cuban people. The approval of the draft resolution once again demonstrates the broad international community's support for the Cuban people in defending their national sovereignty and opposing foreign interference and the blockade, proving that unilateralism and intimidation do not have much backing. Guo Jiakun noted that for 33 consecutive years, China has voted in favor of resolutions in the UN General Assembly condemning the actions of the United States against Cuba. China will continue to support the Cuban people in their opposition to foreign interference and the blockade, and in their efforts to follow a development path suited to their national conditions. The United States was one of the seven countries that voted against the motion. Guo Jiakun stated at a regular press conference that for over six decades, the United States has imposed a brutal blockade and illegal sanctions against Cuba, which seriously violates fundamental norms of international law, including the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. China urges the United States to heed the call of the international community, immediately lift the blockade and sanctions against Cuba, and remove that nation from its list of 'state sponsors of terrorism'.
