Cuba: Protests Over Blackouts as President Vows 'Iron Fist' Against Violence

Protesters in the city of Morón, Cuba, held a demonstration against ongoing power outages and food shortages. Beating pots and pans with their phone flashlights held high, they chanted "Light and food!", "Turn on the power!", and "Down with the dictatorship!". In response, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel stated that "for vandalism and violence, there will be no impunity". He acknowledged that the public's frustration over blackouts is understandable and that complaints are legitimate as long as they are expressed with civic respect for public order. However, he emphasized that violence and vandalism targeting public tranquility and the security of institutions will never be justifiable or accepted. Díaz-Canel's message, which concluded with "For vandalism and violence there will be no impunity," came hours after reports emerged of the events in Morón, where hundreds protested against prolonged power cuts and food scarcity. According to official media, at least five people were detained following violent incidents that broke out at the end of the otherwise peaceful protest. Eyewitnesses reported that a small group threw stones at the headquarters of the Communist Party of Cuba (the only legal party), entered the building causing damage, and set a large bonfire at the entrance using materials from inside. Special units from the Ministry of the Interior then charged the crowd gathered at the party headquarters, making arrests and with sounds similar to gunshots being heard. Several testimonies reported injuries.
